He started by reviewing the basic grammar rules. He realized that he was poor in grammar because he never really understood the rules. For example, he would often mix up verb tenses (时态). To deal with this, he spent a few weeks just going over the basics. It was a little boring at first, but it made a great difference.
Besides reviewing rules, he also used another way, it was a turning point for him, that is keeping a grammar diary. Whenever he made a mistake, he would write it down along with the correct usage. He remembers one time, he kept confusing the past perfect tense with the simple past. Writing out the differences and practicing sentences in his diary helped him internalize (内化) the rules.
